GOP Congress likens immigrants to dog breeding
Iowa Rep. Steve King’s analogy that allowing certain immigrants into the United States is like selecting quality dogs continued to hound him Tuesday — with one group blasting the comparison as “offensive and uncalled for.”
King, a conservative Republican up for re-election, was at a campaign stop in Pocahontas, Iowa, on Monday when he said America attracts “the cream of the crop” of immigrants.
“You want a good bird dog? You want one that’s going to be aggressive? Pick the one that’s the friskiest, the one that’s engaged the most and not the one that’s over there sleeping in the corner,” King said in a video posted online by American Bridge 21st Century, a pro-Democratic research group.
King also suggested that having “the pick of the litter” is like America having “the pick of every donor civilization on the planet.”
